Engineers design and oversee the production of a variety of machines, ranging from central heating systems for homes to robots used in heavy manufacturing environments. One of a mechanical engineer's primary duties is to determine whether a mechanical solution can help eliminate a problem. If so, the engineer must decide on the best solution for the job, design the item and then test it to see if it works as envisioned. Information technology allows mechanical engineers to accomplish these tasks faster, easier and cheaper than they could in the days predating computers.
